Hi,

I bought a French Leaseback Property in 2005. For the first few years the tax fonciere was about €62 but for 2008 I was billed for €366. Was this a a mistake? Eventually I paid it plus penalties in the hope that I would get it back if it was a mistake. Anybody else get a similar bill? What should I do?

Thanks,

The taxe fonciere is normally waivered for the first three years of a new property, although you still have to pay the portion for rubbish collection. It sounds like your 62 euros were for rubbish collection but you are now paying the full amount.

The tax goes towards the funding of local services by the local, departmental and regional councils.Land is also subject to the tax, though to a lesser extent, and there
are also exemptions for buildings of an agricultural nature. There is
also relief for the planting of new woodland.
